When talking about robots, the movie that comes out of mind is
the T-X in “Terminator 3”. It has all
characteristics that contemporary robots are generally have. Usually they are
incredibly strong and high-tech, even though they are created by human, they
are always more strong and smart than human. Besides this, just as most of contemporary
movies or books of robots would like to tell us, the robots in these movies or
books are always scary and has huge power of destroying everything including
the whole body of mankind and lead to the end of the world. In this movie, T-X
is beaten by another robot and the robot did self-destruction as well at the
end. The human beings in this movie, or in this kind of movie, is the metaphor
that for us who overused high technologies to satisfy the desire inside
ourselves, the story will always ends up in a tragedy, no matter it is for
money or any other stuff. This brings up the anxiety of human to technologies,
because it comes with both opportunities and challenges, which is also the
reason that the robot was produced at that time. As human beings with highly
smart brain, using technologies properly within the boarder is crucial. This
reconfirm the opinion that human has ability to control them because they have
high intelligence. But this challenges the old thought that humans are all
conquering.
In contradictory, some contemporary movies of
monster are talking about the positive side of them, which related to love,
kindness and friendship, such as “Edward Scissorhands”. However, it is
till a tragedy, because Edward lives alone forever at the end of the movie. So
that overall reflects the basic tone of movies of novels about robots, which is
passive.
Overall, the movies of
robots are mostly trying to express the anxiety that technologies are somehow
dangerous and hard to use. And never let your desire destroyed yourself or even
the world.
I like your point that all most of robot movies end up as the tragedies. In my opinion, human are the main reason for those tragedies because when they created the robots, they did not think about the consequence that they would be dangerous and may affect human being. Then they comes up with some plans to "protect" human, but actually, what they did is just making up their mistakes and destroying the robots which do not have their rights to decide their own lives.
