Ex Machina

The film I will be looking at is Ex Machina. During the film the robot is tested to see how human it can be.  She uses her femininity and superior language to convince the man that she is weak and needs help to escape.  In actuality she is strong, cunning and is only using emotion to get help when she doesn't really need it.  The main reason for her actions is her order from her creator to, do whatever it takes to escape the facility.

As for the questions for discussion:

1. The figure is a product of our time because of the technology and materials used to make the robot. As well as the setting of the film being set in todays age.

2. The fears and anxieties associated with the figure are: being lied to, your work literally killing you, loss of trust, being used, the unknown, and that the robot more human than us.

3. Yes it most certainly does raise questions on if we are human. The guy testing the robot started to believe she was a regular girl with feelings.

4. I think it challenges what we believe is human. After all that was the main point of the test as far as bringing in a human subject to test the robot.  It was to determine if a robot could pass as a human.

  1. I was going to write about this movie, but instead I wrote about present day robotics used in real life. This movie was for me, a terrifying realization of how much robots can do today and what they will do in the future. I agree that this movie definitely questions what we are as humans. Scientists have been trying to master this test for years and its scary to think that some day in the near future one probably won't be able to tell the difference between a robot and an actual human. After seeing this movie, it made me very curious to know what we actually have in today's technology.

I think that this movie is a perfect representation of how robots can be monsters and how they may someday turn on us, their creators.

  2. I wrote about this movie too. I think the movie is brilliant in that it is a thriller movie but there is no super power or blood and violence. The movie is about how human like AI can be. I think you have a lot of good points. Meanwhile, I was also thinking about the future like Allison. Ava went to the real world eventually and she would succeed there because she has no need for food or a place to stay. I can't help but think about what she would do with her spare time with her capabilities. Will she create more AI like herself because she is lonely and she outlives everyone she knows and loves?

Overall, I think you did a really good job on analyzing the definitions of humanoid AI and using Ava as a perfect example.
