Greed in The Purge
Greed is something that can be regarded as monstrous. For those that have to do without, it is easy to image that the greedy are not human beings that have concern for their fellow man. Instead they can be viewed as monsters that do nothing but take from everyone around them. A great example of this form of frustration can be seen in the movie the purge. This movie directly deals with social concerns about how the wealthy treat people that do not have as much money as they do. The concept of the film is that once a year all crime is legal including murder for one day. The main point of the movie is to show how insensitive the wealthy class of Americans are. The entire film shows how on the purge it is only the poor that die because they cannot afford to protect themselves. The rich meanwhile only go out and kill on this night while thinking nothing for anyone else. This is a really obvious representation of how greed can be portrayed as monstrous.

It's also interesting how the wealthy in the purge create monsters out of the poor. It serves as the justification for the purge. This demonstrates the function of monsters in creating a sense of the Other in order to legitimize violence against them. As is also the case in this scenario, it often turns the persecutors into the real monsters as you pointed out.
