Many things separate us humans from the animals. Whether its opposable thumbs, conscious thinking or the concept of trading tangible goods for other tangible goods or services, we can attest our superiority to certain things. Money has to be one of the most powerful and influential concepts that has propelled us as a species to be more than our ancestral counterparts. This being said, we have not completely escaped our primal instincts and we still exhibit many traits seen in the animal kingdom. One of these traits is the desire to be an alpha male, a leader, one who dominates and demands respect. In our hybrid existence, this type of power usually goes hand in hand with financial success, Think about it, the alpha male in a wolf pack is the first choice when it comes to reproduction. The following picture perfectly shows that this is still a thing in modern society,

This being said, capitalism may only be today's way of becoming dominant. While not all business transactions are the most civil, i dont believe being rich makes you evil, only dominant.
I agree with you that people want to the dominate and they do demand respect. When you're on top, you can have whatever you want (like in the picture you have above). I also don't think that being rich makes you evil but I think the want for being rich and the greed for money can turn anyone evil.
