With the mind
that “monsters” in human being comes from the incentive of money and greed of
human, I found “monsters” in the well-known movie “The Hunger Games”.
In
that film, the theory that monsters in human are created by money and capitalism
shows clearly, and the monsters in that film are the upper level people, for
example, President Coriolanus Snow.
When
I watched this film, I feel like those selected “tributes” are as same as gladiators in
Roman Empire in the history. Firstly, the “tributes” in The Hunger Games and
the gladiators all fight with animals and each other to get a chance to live,
but who lose the competition will also lose their lives. Secondly, the purpose
of those fights and kills is just to entertain the upper level people, and they
are rich and full of greed. Besides, the winner of Hunger Games will be viewed
as heroes and get admiration from people all over the country. Also, some of
them would get the chances to get into upper level, like Katniss and Peeta’s instructor
Haymitch. This result is similar to gladiators because some of them are slaves,
so they could get freedom and even higher social class.
When
we talked about gladiator confrontations today, we would say they are cruel and
inhuman, and this is supposed to be as same as what we view The Hunger Games.
In that film, upper class people in Capitol, especially President Coriolanus
Snow, are monsters. They are greedy and control people in other 12 poorer
districts to get their money and resources. Besides, they are not satisfied
because they already have enough money and become monsters to entertain
themselves by viewing teenagers from 12 poorer districts to fight to death and
to satisfy their inhuman greed.
Lei,
ReplyDeleteThe hunger games is also one of my favorite movies., like you mentioned in your blog, the president is a great example that excessively pursuing money. Not only does this movie shows the cruel of the real life, but also the lust of monstrous human beings like the president is even much more evil than the giant monsters that we talked about in previous sections. You also mentioned relevant historical event that is in the same situation as the tributes in the Hunger Games. The Empire is also an example of treating people as animals for money. All they want is to be rich, which makes them extremely regardless of others, that is, monstrous.
Lei,
ReplyDeleteI wrote about the Hunger Games as well. I didn't think to compare them to gladiators, but I do agree that the tributes are very comparable to them! Not only does the Capitol exploit the tributes for entertainment, but they use the games to control them. In the second movie/book the games are used to instill fear in the "freed" tributes and control them by reaping from the remaining winners of the games. All because President Snow is afraid of losing his power.
